The music ministry in many churches today is the cause for much division. It is common to hear of people who leave churches based on the quality of it's band or lack there of. I believe that if we as a church understand the reason why we sing much division can be avoided. "Thoughts on music in the Church"

The reason for singing can be often over simplified. Singing is central in the Christian life for many reasons, more than just an offering of thanksgiving. In Exodus Moses was commanded to write a song for the purpose of serving as a reminder to the generations to come of what God had done (Deutoronomy 32). Music, beyond our Sunday gathering, can be a tool to remind the believer of great Christian truths throughout the week. In our Sunday gathering music can be a form of building up one another by singing to one another (Ephesians 5:19).

At the Holland Church we sing hymns both new and old, as well as some more contemporary songs. The focus is not so much in the style of the music but rather on the words which are being sung.

The skillful are called to lead with musical excellence. (1 Chronicles 25:1,6-7)

Further than just the skillful, every believer in Christ should sing, for they have great reason to. In Ephesians 5 and Colossians 3 we see a picture of the New Testament believers commanded to sing! "Sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to one another..." Who Sings? Every believer has reason to sing as they reflect on the cross of Christ.

Believers are called not only to sing on Sunday morning's with the gathered beleivers... Believers are not only called to sing when things are going as planned... If the believers "new song" being sung is a song rejoicing over the redemption in Jesus Christ the situation doesn't change the song. When Sing? Sing in response during the seasons of ease, sing as a reminder of God's faithfulness through the trials (Acts 16), sing to one another and unto God when we gather (Eph. 5:19-20; Col.3:16-18).
